TEFL / TESOL in Shanghai

The Shanghai TEFL center was started in 2011 and has been operating since then. The center is located within five minutes of the dong bao xing road subway station in downtown Shanghai, just a 15-minute walk from the bund.

There are many malls, restaurants, bakeries and movie theaters in the vicinity. Many expats call this city their home and it is very easy to meet people in Shanghai.

Our teaching practice in Shanghai takes place at both the center and at low-income primary schools. The teaching practice at the center will be with adults and primary school students aged 6-12. Class sizes range from 6-10 students. For the public school teaching practice, we collaborate with a local charity and provide free English classes at two low-income primary schools. Class sizes here are between 25-50 students and we do a number of one-on-one classes here too. Our experienced trainers observe all Shanghai teaching practice classes, and they are always ready to step in if you need help!

China is currently the most desirable position for ESL teachers. The cost of living is quite low, and the salaries are comparable or exceed those offered by Korean and Japanese employers.

Not only will your teaching salary in China be high compared to local standards (4-5 times higher than Chinese teachers), but at 2400 – 2800 USD/month, you’d be earning more than many entry-level teachers in Western countries. Teachers teaching license or QTS can expect to make almost double that amount. Outside the tier 1 cities like Beijing and Shanghai the salaries go down a little, but so does the cost of living.

Teaching positions in China are available in the public-school sector and at private schools. Most of our alumni end up taking teaching positions at so-called training centers where students (both children and adults) go after work/school. Teachers typically work 35 hours a week here, of which only 15-21 are actual teaching hours. These schools hire year-round. For regular K-12 schools, the best time to do a course would be July, August or January. China is the best place to save money while teaching at the moment.

In addition, EFL teachers can earn extra money by teaching privately.

The hourly part-time rate in Shanghai is between 200 – 400 RMB (30-60 USD) for part-time work, and can be higher if you have experience, can teach science, or have a teaching license that allows you to teach at international schools.

Before you do so, check your contract to make sure there is no conflict of interest.

Shanghai was recently voted the best city to live in as an expat, and it’s not hard to see why. Upon entering Shanghai you’ll notice the mix of tradition and globalization at every street corner. It’s home to the world’s oldest civilization, as well as the world’s tallest high rises, and a stunning skyline. The Former French Concession makes you feel like you are walking around a French city, while the Art-Deco buildings on the Bund are reminiscent of 1930s New York.

But the city is not all about its architecture. As is true of any international city, Shanghai has a thriving nightlife with some of the best clubs in Asia, if not the world.

The city is home to some of the world’s best restaurants, and you can eat find virtually every cuisine here. Great meals can be had for less than $2 USD, but for those who want to splurge, there are many Michelin star restaurants in Shanghai where you can easily spend a hundred times as much.

Shanghai is also served by a large and well connected public transport network comprising of subways, buses and taxis, and is also connected to three national high-speed railways providing convenient access to the rest of China. The cosmopolitan city, easy access to other Chinese cities and the many other expats make Shanghai the best city to live in China.
